This large raptor was roosting at our place. Not as big as a wedgetail, it had a squarish shape to the tail itself – also unlike a wedgetail. However, it had a head of very spikey, tufted feathers just like a wedgetail. To me it looked a bit rougher and tougher than one of the bigger kites. I stand to be corrected though. I would like to have clearer pics for you, but it was stretching the range of my lens. I would have done better with Bert’s 600mm!
As you would expect, the local magpies were very unhappy with its presence. They sent out several ineffectual sorties in an effort to move it on. It eventually left in its own time, doing the flight equivalent of casually loping off into the distance.
