Thunderstorms have brought our first serious rain in months and out of nowhere thousands of soldier beetles have appeared. They weren’t there this morning but by mid afternoon our flowering gum was swamping with masses of these beetles. They appear to be indulging in a mating and feeding frenzy. It is hard to capture their numbers in one photograph but I reckon there are millions of these insects. The question is where did they come from and how long will they stay ? Beetles like these must play an important role in the pollination of many plant species.
